چکیده

This paper surveys the work of the qualitativespatial reasoning group at the University of Leeds. The group has developed a number of logical calculi for representing and reasoning with qualitative spatial relations over regions. We motivate the use of regions as the primary spatial entity and show how a rich language can be built up from surprisingly few primitives. This language can distinguish between convex and a variety of concave shapes and there is also an extension which handles regions with uncertain boundaries. We also present a variety of reasoning techniques, both for static and dynamic situations. A number of possible application areas are brieey mentioned.

Probabilistic Region Connection Calculus

We present a novel probabilistic model and specification language for spatial relations. Qualitative spatial logics such as RCC are used for representation and reasoning about physical entities. Our probabilistic RCC semantics enables a more expressive representation of spatial relations. We observe that reasoning in this new framework can be hard. We address this difficulty by using a factored...

Representing Qualitative Spatial Information in OWL-DL

The Web Ontology Language has not been designed for representing spatial information, which is often required for applications such as Spatial Databases and Geographical Information Systems. As a consequence, many existing OWL ontologies have little success in encoding spatial information. In this paper, we argue that the representation of spatial information is not a fundamental limitation of ...

Visual Spatio-Temporal Programming with a 3D Region Connection Calculus

The ability to perform qualitative spatial reasoning over a collection of 3D objects would be useful for a variety of problem domains, including biomedical analyses, geographic information systems, and mechanical modeling. In addition to the logical consistency checking that would be required for such a system, clearly there would be a need for a graphical interface that would allow the user to...

Generalized Region Connection Calculus

The Region Connection Calculus (RCC) is one of the most widely referenced system of high-level (qualitative) spatial reasoning. RCC assumes a continuous representation of space. This contrasts sharply with the fact that spatial information obtained from physical recording devices is nowadays invariably digital in form and therefore implicitly uses a discrete representation of space. Recently, G...

A Qualitative Approach to Vague Spatio-Thematic Query Processing

In order to support the processing of spatial queries, spatial knowledge must be represented in a way that machines can make use of it. In ontology-based geographic information systems, a challenge thus is to enhance thematic knowledge with spatial knowledge. A way to achieve this is to combine existing approaches to spatial knowledge representation with ontologies. In this paper an implementat...
